Company History:

In 1954, Dr. Bernard Vodnoy, along with his wife Elsye, established Bernell Corporation, a venture that began humbly in his woodshop. There, he crafted a unique selection of vision training devices that he utilized in patient therapy. An expert in his field, Dr. Vodnoy was a sought-after speaker on topics related to Behavioral Optometry and had a worldwide reputation.

His seminal work, "The Practice of Orthoptics and Related Topics," ran for seven editions and was considered a definitive guide in the field. This guide reflected his vision and complemented the innovative products he crafted for Bernell.

However, after Dr. Vodnoy's retirement in the 1980s, the company was sold to a new group of owners who expanded the reach and recognition of the Bernell brand inside the ophthalmic industry, but subsequently suffered financial difficulties in the mid-1990s, leading the company to the edge of closure.

In 1997, Craig Andrews OD, a seasoned optometrist, and his wife Judy, recognized the invaluable role Bernell played in their field. They made the brave and decisive move of investing their life savings in an effort to rescue the company. With the helpful guidance of Dr. Charles Shearer, Dr. Andrews' Optometry School classmate at Indiana University, and leadership of Al Martin, the committed VP of Operations, they reincorporated and rebuild the beleaguered company as Vision Training Products, Inc.

Today, under the leadership of Chris Andrews, Dr. Andrews' youngest son, Bernell has grown exponentially, becoming a global leader in the supply of behavioral optometric products, as well as expanding the offering of primary care ophthalmic equipment. Today, it boasts an extensive range of over 2,000 ophthalmic products, including the world's most diverse collection of Vision Training, Enhancement, and Rehabilitation tools and equipment.

Bernell's significant contributions to the industry have led to recognition by many groups, including the prestigious Industry Appreciation Award by the American Optometric Association for their contributions to the industry via advancements in sports vision.

Currently, Bernell operates as a division of Vision Training Products, Inc., with its headquarters located at 4016 N. Home Street, Mishawaka, IN 46545. The transformation of Bernell, from its humble beginnings in a woodshop to the precipice of closure and then its ascent to a global leader in optometric products, demonstrates the enduring power of vision and determination.
